Sounds like a pre 1975 model with a Select-O-Speed transmission. It would have 10 forward gears and 2 reverse. Basically, depress the left pedal, shift into 1st, then upshift and downshift on the fly. More or less a powershift transmission. If it is currently running and operating, depending on what the seller is asking, might be a decent buy. Most would tell you to run from it, and that may be a good idea if it has transmission problems. Parts for this transmission may be a challenge at this point, however there are enough of them still out there, hard to say what will or will not show up, NOS, used, salvage etc.
You must have the correct manual(s) to work on these, and there is a lot to know about them. Always use the specified fluid and or equivalent in these transmissions.
I ran a 4000 S-O-S for many years doing all the work we needed a tractor for, was a great tractor and though some were a bit jerky, this one was mild, some gears did seem to do that more than not, been a long time since I ran one of these though. I'm still a fan as they have a gear for every task, easy to drive and or teach someone to drive.
One in good operating order may serve you well for many years with decent maintenance, and care. The Ford 5000 was a well regarded tractor otherwise, we sold them new and sold a fair amount of them. I remember a trade in 5000, we field tested while baling hay, sure seemed like a good one then, that one had the 8 speed transmission.

Today's Featured Article - Talk of the Town: Winterizing Engines - To Drain or Not to Drain? - by Russ Berry. What is this strange attraction I have to equipment and machinery? How did I get this way? I came from the suburbs and own a small horse farm in rural Loudoun County, Virginia. You can call me a "weekend farmer." The local farmers do. Does it bother me? No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most
