Carry a test light with you, be ready to trouble shoot when you catch it in the act.
You can use the probe of the test light to check for spark by holding it inside the plug wire boot.
Then check for power to the coil. No power at the coil is usually the ignition switch.
Touch it to the distributor side of the coil primary, it should flash as the engine is cranked. Steady on, the points are not making contact. No light, the points are closed, the condenser is shorted, or the coil is open internally.
Check the temperature of the coil. It should not be uncomfortable to the touch, or considerably hotter than the surrounding components. Could be the coil is failing or the wrong coil, or coil/resistor combination.
