I'd like to know the answer as well. Years ago, I had my two acre pond freeze out my fish or so I thought, even though its 22 feet deep at one end and 13 at the other. I was told gasses could not get by the ice and if I threw a bail of straw in it would stop the issue. So from then on every fall I threw in a bail. It would float around for two to three years before it would sink. At times Id have two or three bails floating in different states of decay. I never had a die off of fish since, but can't say the straw is why. I can say for sure if you have some young trees that you really want to get growing. Sit a bail of hay or straw beside them. don't break the bail just sit it there. I also put a fence post on the other side of the tree to keep the buck deer from destroying them.
