Look at your exhaust while in a situation where it cant pull the load at full throttle. If you have a clutch or a torque converter and blasting black smoke, the air cleaner is plugged or the motor is toast. Adding more black smoke by messing with the pump is not going to gain a single horse power. If the exhaust is reasonably clean under this same load, then the converter is defective and needs to be rebuilt, or the clutch is slipping. The 201 was always plenty of power for whatever it was installed in, you should check other systems before condemning the motor.
