There are two types of poison - one that kills on one feeding and one that takes several feedings. Problem with rats is they will figure out rather quickly what is killing them and stop eating what ever it was. Thus the single feeding poisons can kill rats quickly but within a week or two they won't eat it any more. The multiple feed poisons will eventually do the same but takes significantly longer for them to figure it out. You need to figure out why you have so many rats - must be a food source close buy. If so you will have to eliminate that to get them to eat anything else. If you eliminate the food source they most likely will leave. It takes some time for them to go near anything you put down as they are wary of new stuff. I have had good luck with a gel bait I bought from Farm Tec. Rats seem to go for gel baits better for some reason. Only problem was I had to buy a big pail to get any. Rats are a tough issue to deal with. I've had lots of experience as they like the ear corn I store and have battled them for a long time. If you get them wiped out they will come back if the food comes back.
