The shifter detents are worn and don't stop the shift quadrants in the reverse gear. There are two caps on the right side of the transmission under the caps are springs which push the detent into the shift quadrant. The detents are cone shaped and wear a groove in the quadrant causing the quadrant not to stop in the reverse position. Sometimes when you shift to reverse the quadrant actually goes beyond reverse and disegages reverse gear. Oft times when this occurs a very slight nudge forward on the shift lever will re-egage reverse. There are two was to fix this. 1 replace the quadrant, 2 replace the cone detent with 4230 ball and socket detents (this takes very careful trimming of the detent spring.
