As said below, washing soda is much better at making an alkaline solution which is what you want, the reaction will always slow as the anode becomes covered. The dropping of amps is your sign that its time to clean, I always found a smooth surface is easier to deal with and only a quick wipe gets you back to working at its best. The threaded rod would take a good scrubbing with a brush to get all the surface clean every time.As for the last question, as long as you see bubbles and or foam on the top of the solution, things are still happening. I dont think Ive ever had one stop completely not matter how bad things had loaded up. Remember that it works by line of sight only, if your tank has a baffle the anode might not get the back side without some creative bending of the anode.
