Changing fluid and the filter does no harm as long as it is done properly, the correct fluid and amount are used, and the pan goes back on clean.
The old stories about causing the transmission to fail are generated from waiting too long, the the seals and clutches are already damaged. A new filter gives a temporary fix, then soon fails again as the clutches are shedding material clogging the filter.
The old Ford transmissions had several small bolts of different lengths holding the filter on. Getting them mixed up, or over tightening could damage the valve body, causing all kinds of problems.
And always use the proper fluid. Some are very specific, and it makes a big difference.
Avoid contaminating the transmission with grit or gasket sealer.
