Is that a 1949 era Lincoln Zephyr engine? Whomever did the hood stretch did a marvelous job. I wonder if he ever put the drive train to the stress of actually doing any work.....if so, wonder how it withstood the doubling or so of the torque.
On putting in a newer engine, I think it would kill the antique...ness of the creation.
Back in the day, flat head V8 block cracks were common between the exhaust valve seat and the cylinder. Had one. At the time a local repair shop on Harrisburg Blvd., in Houston, Tx., was noted for being able to repair that malfunction. Had a parking lot full of backlog. Course it was temporary as it would reoccur. Back then a valve job was at 45k miles and an overhaul at 100k......at least for the urban dwellers in my neck of the woods....Texas gulf coast running Tetrahedral Leaded gas and making continuous short, urban trips. My how technology and lubricants have changed over the years.
It seems that in an inline engine a flathead is an ok idea but when you cut the casting at 45* and glue it to another modified as such, the exhaust has a long path to get out of the engine, hence the reason for the blocks cracking.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
