First place I'd check is whether the shut down lever is stuck. You push the stop handle inwards while starting the engine & it should spring back to the run position once you leave it. Then you pull it to stop. Check the operation of this before looking deeper.
They are very good starters usually - mine never needed the thermostart until down around freezing point.
