Mousehole, welcome to YT. I am not a Ford guy but here is something to check. Is the oil level way over full. It is a rare occurrence on up draft carburetors but it can happen. There is a possibility that the needle and seat in the carb started leaking by as it was setting. Then it filled the carb and intake with gas enough that it flowed past an open intake valve into a cylinder and past the rings into the crankcase. Over time when the gas tank was empty the rest of the gas in the intake slowly dissipated out of a slow leak at the connection of the air intake hose to the carb.
