What i used back in m oil patch days for lease roads was a carry over from when i worked for a construction company. and it might be a bit over kill on a drive was . What we used because it was CHEAP and there was Mountains of it all around me was Slag from the Blast furnaces depending on area and subsoil type determined the base thickness of #1 anywhere from a foot to two foot of base then 6-12 inches of #4 then top coat was what we called 304 that was sorta like a clean up of the 57 pile the #8 and 8 X all mixed together i would put that down at around 6-8 inches thick and that would lock up tight as concrete with a little rain and a stream of heavy trucks driving on it . Run the dozer over a couple times to knock off the high points and pretty soon a 50000 Lb dozer would hardly scratch the surface . We put them in back in the mid 70's to eary 80's and they to this day are rock solid . some locations still have trucks running in and out on them and still like the day i put them in Lime stone like our 8X with fines as a top coat will filter down thru and start locking up loose stone and pack like concrete . Another fantastic starter base that will set up once it works down is rail road ballast . Back in the late 70's the rail road was redoing the two main lines running thru town and GIVING away the OLD ballast to anyone that had a dump truck tandem size and up I had the New 4300 I H Eagle and new 30 foot East First day i got four loads hauled the next day i got three as the word spread more trucks showed up and i only got two in as this was a case of being FIRST in line in the morning did not mean you were the First out and you were the last out . But i built a huge pile of it and used some for the parking area for my semi and once set in it was there to stay even when the frost came out in the spring it did not matter how heavy i was loaded it never moved never mushed out never sank under some of them 130-140000 lb loads.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery.
