G12 and G40 are not the same thing but both are compatible with VW. They are both phosphate free. Some say GM Dex Cool is the same as G12 but I would not use it in a VW.
Stay away from coolant for Asian cars. It has phosphate in it. And never mix differant types of coolant even if both are compatible with your car.
Its also wrong to think color has anything to do with type of coolant. Asia uses a differant color for each type of coolant. But in Europe each manufacture has a differant color even if they have two types and the same type from a differant manufacture will be a differant color.
So pick either G12 or G40 (better one) and go with it.
