Beware- this is an old memory! As I recall, all of the Fiat designed and/or built drive trains AC used employed a similar set up. That being a two part engine clutch, the PTO clutch part being controlled by a hand lever. The drill was- pull the clutch lever, then engage the PTO gear shift, then release the clutch lever. I don't remember where, or how many safety switches were involved. That may be his issue. I do remember it seems like you seldom could get the PTO shifter engaged without grinding it in. I had a 6060, which was a totally different tractor, but it was a Fiat drive train, with the same general design. The PTO operation was archaic and miserable. Enough to encourage me to get rid of it.
