I read a bit more of your post, and it sounds like the hard start issue is happening when the engine is hot. A wrong starter would do just that. Is it possible that the starter is getting too hot?
Some car starters have to have a heat shield on them, as they would not start when the engine was hot. SO even with everything checking out fine, the extra heat on the starter was the culprit.
But you really should you voltage readings when the engine will not crank over, then you will know for sure, you can then concentrate on the starter. There are shops where they load test the starter if you can find one. But they will test it at room temperature, not at the temperature that its not working, that is why you need to know the voltages at the the terminals
