Of course there are many practical applications. When I was in high school & college, I experimented with electronics a lot. Being able to control voltages was an important part of my experiments. Another use is to bring up the voltage very slowly on vintage electronics. The capacitors on vintage electronics power supplies will short if voltages is applied too high too fast being inactive for a long period of time.
