When GM went to HV ignition back in the 60-70's they had issues with distributor and rotors shorting out. Too much voltage,
I can't see converting to electronic high voltage ignition.
I remember some first generation, or early generation, aftermarket electronic ignitions where they used the points, removed condenser and points turned a power transistor on and off. Points lasted forever. Primary current went through transistor, very little current went through point.
Keep in mind my memory isn't as good as it used to be. I had one so I may be a little off of how it worked.
