Ive seen that happen often over many years due to corrosion and resistance causing extreme heat (I Squared R) and/or there was excess current draw due to a starter/solenoid problem or other bad/loose/corroded/resistive connections. On many old tractors in extreme cold weather Ive seen starter solenoids stick closed causing high current that melted cable connections and lead battery posts OUCH lol
