Your truck is newer than mine (Stabilitrak??), but every time I've had a wiring issue on the truck that affected the trailer, it had to do with the wiring at rear of truck.
On two trucks (a Dodge Ram and a Chevy Silverado), both had the same kind of trailer plugin harness going to the tail lights. In both instances, the connectors on the harnesses were facing the same direction. One truck had enough clearance to prevent problem, but the other (I think the Dodge) had one connector jammed against the wheel well. Movement had worn through the wire right at the connector.
On the Chevy, I'm guessing some object popped up and cut into the insulation and part way through the wire - enough to throw a code.
It's a simple place to check, but seems to be a problem spot.
