12 volt deep cycle batteries would work but the run time and range for them would be about 50% or less than regular golf car batteries becasue a deep cycle is not designed for the heavy load draw down that a golf cart puts on a battery pack sometimes as much as a 300 amps draw. The life span of the deep cycle batteries would be very short also. My qualifications for this answer are that I was the maintance guy for the local golf course for 8 1/2 and have been working on golf cars for about 25 years now, both gas and electric.

An interestig FYI. A golf cart is the small 3 wheel buggy that people push by hand to carry their clubs. The motorize one is really a golf car!
