Carburetor icing is caused by moisture and other fuel components that freeze at cool temperatures (like benzine) that are reached because the temperature reduction cause by the heat removed from the air stream by evaporating the fuel and the expansion in the carburetor venturi feeding the vacuum of the intake manifold. Its cured by adding heat to keep the air warmer and helped by using fuels that have compounds added to clean up the water. Amoco used to advertise their gas wouldn't freeze in the carburetor. I don't know if I've tested that claim. My JD 4020 manual suggests adding carburetor heat when lightly or medium loaded and the average air temperature is below 90°F and below 70°F for heavy loads.
