Budget isn't as much of a problem as finding a minder that will last. I am dealing with one 1000 amp battery. The other day when the lights went out I got just a grunt when I hit the start button on the genny. I don't know how long the minder has been out to lunch but I will confess it has been six months since I last exercised this unit. This 80 year old military generator does not charge the battery anymore. The three ceramic resistors that regulate the charge were broken when I bought the generator so I just rely on a charger that is plugged into the generator itself if I need to run it for a long period. Our power grid is very dependable so I never have had to run this thing to power the farm but it is nice to have it handy.
