What are you planning on using? Limestone, red rock, washed rock? If there is a lot of heavy truck traffic limestone will crush down to powder eventually where red rock will not. Dirty crushed limestone will pack down where red rock or washed rock will not pack for a very long time. In my neck of the woods we use primarily crushed limestone because it is locally available. If you are starting a new lane that will see light traffic like cars and pickups you can start with a 2" base and after it is packed you can top it with 1" or 3/4". If trucks will be using it year round here in Iowa 3" base stone is best.
