And often they were replaced by a 12 volt battery that was no where near the amperage that the 2 6 volts had. I never found much difference between a positive ground and negative ground system. If it's having problems test and observe I doubt that changing the polarity is going to effect much. The only reason I would change is if I was changing out the generator and the one going in was designed for a negative ground system or needed to run something that was negative ground only. Your tractor is about 60 years old check the cables and connections, make sure they're the right size and verify what ever battery(s) you have are pretty close to what the factory specified when they built it.
