Direct injection squirts straight in to a dished area on the piston where it burns and expands, indirect injection squirts into a pre-combustion chamber, burns and expand slowly onto the piston via a small port.
Direct injection fires up quicker, Fordson Majors of the same era only turned over one or two compressions. The SBWD6 had to be heated with glow plugs for up to 40 secs. before attempting to start.
The SBWD6 and later B450's with a similar engine were excellent pulling tractors.
