Google recently changed the logic on their GPS trip planning to take you on what they consider to be the greenest route. Generally that is a combination of the shortest/quickest route, but not always. I've found that having a paper map to compare can save a considerable amount on driving time/distance.
On the other hand, Google usually knows about trip delays and displays them in red on your route.
