If they got changed when the oil got changed they were doing pretty well. Most got changed seasonally at best. I've bought a couple of older vehicles and tractors and the first thing I did was all the maintenance work that appeared to have been neglected for years (decades?). The worst being a 350 Farmall that dirt up to the wire mesh filter. This tractor had seen minimal use for years so the dirt had to be a decade old - given the condition its possible the oil in the crank was very old too. The dirt in the very bottom of the canister was very hard had to be scraped out with a screw driver.
I have cleaned the mesh by letting it soak in a bucket of gas for a couple days then sloshing it around to to rinse it. Cleans them up pretty decent. The manual says to use the same oil in the air filter as what's in the crank case - I use Mercon V auto transmission fluid - very heavy detergents to clean the air and the filter mesh if it been neglected.
I've never read anything about changing the oil in the air filter system daily.

If it would just start when I turn the key, then I would use it more often. In addition to a bad case of old age, most of the tractor's original electrical system was simply too unreliable to keep. The main focus of this page is to show how I upgr
