I se that everyday around here with the local landscape and contractors . since i was 17 i have hauled many loads with alot of them getting on up to 250000 lbs . And even with proper chaining they can still break loose as i have had that happen to me TWICE , i have had chains break due to trailer flex , if you want to see a trailer FLEX then go pull a load on a RGN , if you are faint at heart then don't pull that trailer . It will scare the Devil out of you . I have had a brand new 48and change Gradeall darn near come off when i had to make a panic stop at just 25 Mph , she broke thru two 3/8ths G 70 chains I had eight chains on that load . I had a 68000 lb tire press kick out due to the NEW way the plant engineers demanded in chain the load and it did what i said would happen and Broke chains and kicked off two feet . If a load wants to come off it is going to come off , one bad weld one weak link one wore out binder , flex of the trailer . BUT NOT even tryen to tie the load on . I have had some of my friends that bought trailers that think two straps are good and will show you HEY LOOK they are good for 10000 LBs as they do not understand the concept of working load . One was like hey the skid steer will set there i have the parking brake on i don't need chains . go haul for KEEN trucking they will tell you how many chains yes i said Chains and binders ya need to haul a Skid Steer from the Cat plant , most of them are around 6000 lbs . And before you pull out your load is inspected . And thus if it is not done correctly you don't MOVE till it is done Correctly . There EACH SKID STEER is required to have FIVE , yes FIVE chains and binders on each one . NO Straps as they follow the old RULE and the OLD RULE IS , IF your going to haul IRON then it take IRON to haul it . My first load out I carried 24 chains and binders and had thirty ratchet straps . I loaded the load and had three chains and binder on each NOPe needed more as a bunch of us there loading found out . Even the company trucks had FIVE on each not just the brokers . But they were nice about it as they had chains and binders you could buy on site , Plus you also had to have two spare chains and binders left over once you were done loading . So i had to BUY 8 chains and binders . I was doing a lot of haulking at the time for Keen . I would take a tire press down to N.C and haul for keen out of there going where ever . I hauled skid steers Ft. end loaders out of the Cat plants , new John Deere and Hitachi excavators out of the plant , Yellow out one side and Orange out the other . All big money loads other then the skid steers easy fast load and go . How many chains do you need on a twelve and half foot disc ?? 2,3, 4 ???? Don't know , Indiana DOT will enlighten ya .
