When I rode the bus, the school had very few dedicated drivers, most were teachers or coaches.
A couple times the driver turned around and went back to the school and dropped off unruly students. Made us all late getting home.
One particularly gruff old coach (that I would swear I smelled alcohol on his breath), carried his paddle on the bus with him, and used it!
I remember him stopping on the side of a very busy state highway, getting the offenders off the bus, lining them up and applying the paddle. These were high school kids (thugs) so he didn't hold back.
