Its the high pitched noises that hurt their ears since their upper range far exceeds ours...like dog whistles that they can hear but you can't. I have to mow around my dog's 40' squarepen and my different mowers generate different frequencies from different parts of the mowers. Most cause her to move to the far side of the pen but some put her there and she shows signs of wanting to dig out...so I keep the RPMs down around the pen as much as I can. In the fall when I get the leaf vac out.....pulled with a ZT mower, it drives her up the wall but the job has to get done and she just has to grin and bear it.
