Sounds like it's working fine. There is no clutch in those as they are a torque converter system. Think of them like an automatic transmission in a car, put it in gear, drop the clutch and add gas to go. Letting the clutch out above idle is the same as dropping your car in drive at that throttle setting. Always let the clutch out at idle then add gas to move.
