Tobacco land has for a long time been fumigated to help kill any disease and pest issues that are in the soil. This and variety selection is the only defense there is to prevent it from dying. We do rotate the crops around. We try to wait 3 years between Tobacco crops before planting it back again in the same fields. 4 plus years works even better. It has been a good rotational crop for us as there's things that go with this crop that usually are not received from others such as fertlizer blends and insect control (nematodes especially). We've had the best soybean crop from following a baccer crop.
