I do lots of research and sometimes plan out the trip knowing in advance where lots of these old schools and churches are located at..On Monday I spent the day in Barry County MO leaving home before 6 AM on practically no sleep..I ended up taking 30 plus pictures of old schools and churches....It was 80 miles to the first picture and I ended up driving 444 miles total....It was a very long but fun day..I'm still beat from that trip...The Barry County Historical Society has done a wonderful job on telling whats left and the locations-etc...Some counties have done little or nothing.
However, theres not much information on some counties especially in Kansas...I use online old late 1800's-early 1900 plat books for the locations of the schools-churches-etc...I use Google Earth and check out some of the locations..Lots of times its just hit and miss on finding any..Some days I drive 300 miles and only have 5-6 pictures for my efforts...Other times I have 10-20 pictures.
This is the Hailey one room school located east of Cassville in the Hailey community of Barry County MO..Its down a hollow and there are no real good roads to it...One time I was practically driving in a creek bed at 5-10 mph over rocks-washouts...If a big rain came the water could be 6-8 ft deep..Southern and eastern Barry County is very rugged country thats located in the Mark Twain National Forest....Kansas is much easier to get around in..
The Brock one room school SW of Shell Knob,MO...The road to it was decent but look how close the school is to it...It was just a horse path in the old days..
