If the battery is good with no internal shorts ??? (other than may need charged up) and there's no other shorts or excessive loads??? if the charging system is working Id expect the charging amps INTO THE BATTERY to back off much less then 20 after time or risk overcharging the battery. Maybe there is another current path which keeps the genny running at full bore instead of all going into battery ?? As the other sparkies mentioned a voltmeter on the battery can help and Id expect maybe 7 or so volts on the battery until (subject to RPM) its charged then (subject to Voltage Regulator and Genny) maybe level off to 6.5 to under 7 depending on load........If theres a short in the charging system or the VR is bad such that its full fielding all the time that could cause it to constantly max charge. I think that 44 might be a Class B Charging System Im not sure..
