Written and performed by Donovan Leitch, it was released as the title song on the Mellow Yellow album in 1966.
Heard it thousands of times, never really gave much thought about what it meant and misunderstood probably half of the words!
Did some quick research, found out it really doesn't have a lot of meaning...
It's about being 'mellow'. Laid back and cool, taking it easy, chilled outlook. Mostly it's a collection of words that rhyme and flow well.
Supposedly John Lennon had some influence on the writing, and sat in on the recording. Rumor has it his voice is in there somewhere.
But it also has a more sinister slant. Seems in 1963 the patent on LSD (there was a patent?) ran out, and due to a snafu in the legislature, LSD was not listed as a controlled substance, making it legal to possess and produce! One of the home brew varieties was known as 'Mellow Yellow' on the streets. Was this a drug reference? Donovan says no, but maybe...
