You mention red clay .I am familiar with red clay in Georgia thqt is pretty sandy. If there is a lot of sand in the dam it may require reconstruction in an engineered manner with an internal drainage design. Our clay in SE Indian tends to be sticky and makes great ponds if a good key has been cut thru any rock that would underlay the dam. I have used the internal drainage design for a large dam along the river where the clay is dirty and has sand seams. I have used bentonite to try to plug small leaks or seep's. Bentonite or a polymer can work its all in finding where to put it?
