The shaft that has stripped out goes the full way across the tiller. It slips into the 90 degree gear box which makes the PTO drive go from front to back to side to side. The hex shaft is held in to the drive gear on the side by a lock collar. My thinking is that I can cut the bad part of the shaft off and bevel the end to make it easy to get started then drive the shaft into the drive gear and put the lock collar back in place to hold it where it should be. I've never worked on something like this but seem to be a simple design
