Stan, 87 octane is fine on old tractors. They dont have enough compression to start a fight, and all high octane fuel is for is to prevent pre ignition (spark knocking) in HIGH compression engines so its no benefit to your tractor. If youre able to buy the old fashion leaded gas at not too high a price its best because it lubricates the valves and pads the valves collission with its seat. Thats why engines designed for unleaded fuels have hardened seats which that tractor doesnt. Long hard hot use on regular seats with unleaded fuel is a little detrimental to the seats and valves, and thats why they make lead additive but it has drawbacks Ive heard of. If youre gonna use it hard and long under heavy loads, I would consider leaded 87 octane, if you can get it, or a lead additive in unleaded gas, otherwise for easy use, use the 87 unleaded and it will be years before you need a valve job. Years Years ago the oil companies cried and said we gotta add lead to the gas and it will cost customers more, then yeras later they cried, Oh we gotta remove that nasty lead and that will cost you more ????????/ Go figure!
