The tractor serial number is not on the top of differential brake housing. It's on the back (rear) of housing up near the top. It's usually obscured by years of paint, dirt, rust, etc. and takes a little scrubbing to find it. Even then, they can be hard to read. That's the number you want though, to identify age of tractor.

If you rebuild the motor, you could use hardened seats and valves, and unleaded fuel. But if your old tractor runs good, a simple lead substitute added to the gas is a perfectly reasonable solution.
