Quote: CVPost-300jk (quoted from post at 16:22:17 05/29/22) That stinks on something not that old ! We have a PJ gooseneck thats from early 2000s and the powder coat is peeling here and there. Never sees the winter. We take stuff at work to a place locally that specializes in powder coating. They say one of the biggest things is metal prep before the coating. They sandblast and clean new steel before coating. I agree with them. Have you ever taken a new piece of steel and ground it a little with a flap wheel ? There is definetly a thin coating on it. Powder coat shop says thats why a lot of power coat fails. Bad prep ! Still not something nice to find !
The problem with powder coat on trailers is not the prep it is that there is no prep. Powder coating shops always blast all the old coating and rust off. Almost all of their work is used parts. Trailer manufacturers use powder coat only because it gets them off the hook for VOC regs. I wouldn't buy another powder coated trailer.

The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
