My BCS tiller has a ground speed of a little less than 1 MPH in first gear & a tine shaft speed of 290 RPM. That combo gives a tine to tire ratio of 20:1 RPM, 10:1 RPM in second gear (2 MPH). First gear will turn the hard ground to potting soil in the Spring. Second gear is good for cruising along & lightly cultivating the top of the soil. Second is also good for keeping the tiller afloat, as it would just sink & spin in first in the soft ground. Also, first chops the ground up too fine & it will be concrete by fall unless you till all the time & it is not recommended to over-till the garden.
