I have had 3 major wrecks in my lifetime going back to 1973. In each one of them, I would have been killed or crippled if I had been wearing a seat belt. The last one was in 2001. I was driving along on a wet road in the middle lane of a highway with 3 lanes in each direction. The driver in the pickup in the right lane lost control (hit ice) and spun out and crossed directly in front of me sideways. I ended up taking out a bunch of gusrd rail, several trees, and at the last minute, I was able to swing around on the shifter as a big tree trunk came crashing through the windshield and into the headrest of the driver seat. Having a seat belt on would most certainly have been fatal.
A good friend's wife was crippled by wearing a seat belt in a 1966 Chevy. The middle hump crumbled up around her foot, and she was unable to move enough to avoid her foot being crushed.
I don't like seat belts, and I do not wear them. I personally think it is a mixed bag. Sometimes they work well and other times, they do not. Fortunately, seatbelt violations are not a primary offense (like in NY) here in Pa.
Each and every one of you is entitled to your own opinion, and entitled to believe in seat belts or not. Just don't waste your time lecturing me about risk taking. As far as I know, this is still (mostly) a free country.
