I work in the small engine field and in the last 14 years I have only rebuilt two K-series kohlers for a customer. There is a lot of risk to the mechanic that a rebuild won't be satisfactory. Also the question comes up: Where do you stop replacing parts? The crank and rods are worn too.
If its not a Command series engine, you might try changing over to 20w50 and see what happens. Kohler stresses they want 10w30 in their Command engines to keep the hydraulic lifters happy and quiet.
