Nobody ever figured it out, but years ago when I was in the boat and outboard motor repair business, my labor charge went up if the customer watched me work.
I'm not sure why, but regardless of what a runability problem was with an outboard, the owner almost always insisted it acted like the timing was off. Even on models where the timing was built in and there was no way to change it.
I remember one rocket scientist who had a 90 hp Johnson V4 outboard. It had an external distributor driven by a notched belt. There were marks to line up to install the belt properly. When his spark plugs began to fail, he said it had gotten out of time, and he started playing around with how the timing belt was installed.
In the shop, I reset the timing belt according to the marks, and installed a new set of plugs. It started right up and purred like it was supposed to. All the while he was standing there insisting it wouldn't run right with the timing set that way. Even after I showed him in the book how the timing belt was supposed to be installed, he still insisted that wasn't right.
I guess I shouldn't knock him, I made a lot of money off of him.
