i will add. like Jon says the torque converter is exactly like a car. it will slip just like a car. so a COMatic tractor can be idled down and depending on the gear, it will simply sit there like a car at a stop light. they do have a set of clutches (disc pack) between the torque converter and the transmission (regular 4x2 8 speed) so when you disengage the clutch pedal it cuts power to the transmission and stops the tractor so you can shift. this is all hydraulically actuated.
when starting out say with a plow in the ground you go in COMatic (torque converter mode) and once going and up to speed you engage the direct drive lever which locks the torque convert out so there is no converter slippage (like modern cars from the last 30 years do it electronically) then if you come to a tough spot you just bump it back to CaseOMatic mode and get thru it. CaseOMatics have a pressure gage so you know if the COMatic pressure is right and a temp gage so you know if the COMatic fluid is too hot (if you're doing too much in torque converter mode they will get hot, like a car). they will have a set of oil lines go up to and back from the radiator like an automatic car as well.
you will see some change in speed with the direct drive engaged. handy hay tractors as you find the right gear and bale in direct drive then if you have a heavy spot or big clump you can go to COMatic mode and ease thru it. pretty handy.
a couple things to watch. check the fluid (big dipstick on left side) for level and burnt oil and some ?? are known to have the clutch pack discs behind the torque converter warp some making it hard to shift (gears keep spinning some). like anything else they can be abused as well.
generally good transmissions and kinda neat. i liked the one we had and i could pull small trees out with no trouble. find a low gear and add some gas and let the torque pull it out (Be careful) i've heard that a diesel caseOmatic is a good set up for tractor pulling too.

This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
