hey Steve I just need to bite my toung for going on about that coil.it wasn't the coil, the key switch was shorted probably to ground.bc I went to turn the distributer to time the tractor I got shocked.that explains when I would shut the tractor off,it would keep running a little bit.i found another coil that said use with external resister so I used the ballast resister block with the coil.i put new points, plugs, condenser, rotor, distributer cap and timed the tractor, and it runs better than it ever has.the distributer cap they had on the tractor, they put two o-rings on the bottom where it sets on the distributer to raise it high enough so the rotor would fire on each electrode.totally the wrong distributer cap for that tractor.i just thought you might get a good laugh about what some people might try and Jerry rig things.
