If you want to run your central air conditioner, you probably need something that can put out around 6000 watts at 240 volts. That's still not adequate to run an electric range, but it will power most of your house. Maybe go bigger if you have an electric water heater. Generators of this size are pretty heavy and if you want to go any bigger you should consider a stationary unit. Either way, a 240 volt generator needs a transfer switch to power the whole house. A whole-house transfer switch like the Reliance Controls TWB2003DR replaces your existing main disconnect (if you have one) and allows you to run the whole house rather than just some circuits.
At the other extreme, you can use a 120 volt generator to run just a few critical appliances, such as your refrigerator. Running extension cords all over the place is aggravating, but it's a fairly cheap solution.
Consider an inverter generator if you have close-by neighbors. They're much quieter than conventional generators.
