I finished my oats planting last week. While I usually use my Farmall H to pull the grain drill, it was giving rides in a pumpkin patch so I used my Farmall 300. Here in south central Texas oats makes wonderful winter grazing. I've been advised to overseed with 10 to 15 pounds per acre of ryegrass seed to extend the spring grazing. My old drill is a John Deere VanBrunt as best I can tell. It doesn't really have any rye settings as low as 10 to 15 pounds per acre. I plan to use the same grain box on the drill I used for the oats and set it for just a minimal feed. I've also been advised to plant the rye seed very shallowly - no more than 1/2 inch deep. OR would you advise me just to scatter the seed and use a drag harrow to cover it a bit? Or would you suggest some other way? Advice appreciated. Thanks, kelly
