Hello, I've been wandering the net looking for ideas on building a small offroad tractor for fun in the woods on the quad trails behind my house. I was planning on building an angle steel frame and mounting an some old heavy duty tractor parts on it. I want to find maybe an 18 HP engine and a transaxle that is heavy enough to withstand abuse off road. Ideally I want to weld the gears into a spool for a permanent locker, how can this be done on a transaxle as opposed to a conventional axle? There is a local junkyard that has a bunch of old Bolens tractors laying around, along with other older models. How can I tell if the transaxle is any good? (The engines in these beasts quit a while ago) Also, what driveshaft components should I obtain from these tractors to build the driveline system? How does the clutch and braking system work in these types of machines? Any info you can provide will appreciated.
