I had a 5140 CaseIH tractor with a loader. The parking brake on my tractor was certainly not the tractors best design point.. I ran this tractor to 8,000 hours, and the parking brake was all but gone when I traded the tractor in. It had flashing lights on the dash that alerted you that the brake was on, and that worked very well to keep you from driving off with the parking brake engaged . The reason these parking brakes dont get fixed is because its an expensive repair. The park brake is on the transmission. So as I was to understand the cab had to be removed, and the transmission opened up to make the repairs. If you have the facilities and the knowledge to do this kind of job, maybe this isnt a bad deal, but if you have to take this tractor to a CaseIH dealership to get this repair completed, this is going to make your tractor 5-10 thousand dollars more expensive, depending upon how many times the dealership mechanics have preformed this repair. You dont want to pay someone to learn how to fix your tractor. This tractor is probably 30-32 years old, and the guys working on it may well never have had one apart before. These were a good strong , reliable tractor overall, and the 6 cylinder CDI engine was probably the best feature. The power shift electric switches do give some trouble as the tractors age. One thing I didnt like was that the heat/AC radio etc. was all up overhead. I was constantly having to bend down under this overhead arrangement to see the loader when loading hay bales on a truck or tall wagon. And the air blowing out of the vents got to be annoying, as it would dry your eyes, and the cold AC air blowing on your head felt great at first, but could give you a headache. And the condenser tray drain pipes would plug up, causing water from the AC unit to rain down on the operator. I believe the hydraulic pumps for these tractors are internal and only used on the 5140-5240 model tractor, so once again if the hydraulic system quits working, look out for an expensive repair. My friend had the same tractor and dumped $12,000.00 into repairs on the hydraulic system, park brakes, then after the power shift started giving him problems. Check to see if your CaseIH dealership can get parts for these components before you pull the trigger on a purchase. These companies which have models that had a short build period, will often tell you that no parts are available because this is considered an obsolete machine. Yet they can nearly sell you any part needed for a 50 year old IH966. These are my thoughts, and I loved the tractor when it was new !

Most of us conjure up a picture of a massive thresher with a wide belt lazily arching to a tractor 35 feet away throwing a cloud of dust, straw and grain, and while nostalgic, not too practical a method of using our tractors. While this may have been the bread and butter of the belt work in the past (since this is what made the money on many farms), the smaller tasks may have been and still can be its real claim to fame.
